Glossary

Raising the frame is usually the most exciting step of building a house. It happens quickly. Where there was only a bare foundation in the morning, by late afternoon the shape of the whole house is defined.

All cut timbers and other pieces that were prepared for transport are reassembled at the building site with a crane operator and a crew. This process includes putting the final touches on the joinery and rigging the bents, which are stacked in the sequence in which they will be raised. Coordination and precise positioning are essential to raising the frame. When done properly, a frame remains secure for centuries.
